Natrelle™ "Gummy Bear" Cohesive Gel Breast Implants in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Plastic surgeon Dr. Brad Bengtson is pleased to offer FDA-approved (2013) Natrelle™ Style 410 Cohesive Gel "Gummy Bear" breast implants for all of his Grand Rapids and Detroit, Michigan, patients. At the time of launch, Dr. Bengtson had the largest single-surgeon use in breast augmentation patients in the U.S. He has written extensively and published many book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on the use of cohesive gel breast implants and has educated thousands of plastic surgeons throughout the world on proper implant and patient selection. Dr. Bengtson offers his breast augmentation patients a wide range of implant choices, and it’s no mystery why one of the most popular has become cohesive gel gummy bear breast implants for his patients in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Used in breast augmentation procedures, cohesive gel “gummy bear” breast implants can help Grand Rapids and Detroit area patients achieve a natural, proportional shape and volume to enhance their breast and body. Cohesive gel implants are not appropriate for all women, so if you’re interested, you should seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon who has extensive education and experience using this implant. Dr. Bengtson offers cohesive gel “gummy bear” breast implants at his Grand Rapids, Michigan practice, as well as silicone gel and saline-filled implants to meet all of his patients’ needs.
Dr. Bengtson has patented the Style 410 Cohesive Gel Implant Selector Tool along with his co-developers Dr. Adams and Teitelbaum. Dr. Bengtson was a lead investigator using this device since March of 2001 prior to FDA approval as part of a large pre-market approval study with over 600 patients benefiting from this device prior to its formal release last year.
Along with the privilege to have the largest single-surgeon augmentation patient group with the Style 410 in the U.S., Dr. Bengtson has been integrally involved in developing Allergan’s surgeon educational curriculum for the launch of Natrelle™ Style 410 Cohesive Gel “Gummy Bear” breast implants. Grand Rapids Plastic Surgeon Dr. Bengtson is a national leader in some of the most innovative and interesting research, new technology, and hot topics in plastic surgery today. He has lectured nationally and internationally on the successful use of the Style 410 implant, educating other plastic surgeons on the nuances of the device.
Dr. Bengtson was awarded the Tiffany Award by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for his work utilizing High-Resolution Ultrasound to examine gel breast implants, and for highlighting the differences between saline and silicone devices. Dr. B uses ultrasound daily to evaluate breast implants and follow them inside the body, reassuring patients on the status of their breast implants without costly MRIs.
Dr. Brad Bengtson is among the most experienced and busiest breast augmentation surgeons in the United States. In May 2012 he was selected to lead, educate, and help develop the certification process for plastic surgeons in the United States regarding “Gummy Bear” 410 Cohesive Gel implants. His Grand Rapids practice is among the most experienced in the United States at implanting this device.
Dr. Bengtson is part of a select group that promotes tissue-based planning principles and lectures across the United States and Europe. This group is dedicated to helping patients select from a range of breast implants that are proportionate to patients’ breast and body. Your individualized consultation and plan includes selection of the type, shape, and size of your implant, using West Michigan’s only current Vectra 3D Imaging and Simulation System, which allows you to visualize and experience your personalized results prior to surgery.
Positioning of the breast implant is determined by your natural breast tissue, fitness, and lifestyle. Dr. Bengtson promotes a 24- to 48-hour Fast-Trak Recovery Program by creating the breast implant pocket in an atraumatic way with no bleeding, placing implants proportional to your breast pocket, and encouraging early range of motion and quick return to activities of daily living with few restrictions.
He is also a firm believer in tissue-based planning, and co-developed and patented the 410, Gummy Bear Implant Selector Tool critical to the education and use of the 410-shaped devices. Every woman is unique; your breast enhancement experience at the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery is tailored uniquely to fit your goals, lifestyle, breasts, and body.

Why are they called "Gummy Bear" Implants?
Made with highly cohesive silicone gel, these implants have a consistency that was previously unavailable in any breast implant. Most silicone breast implants have a silicone gel that is less sticky or cohesive, while the 410 is more like gelatin, or rubber cement. For this reason, people have nicknamed them “gummy bear breast implants.” At our Grand Rapids practice, we often explain that these implants are like gummy bear candies: if you cut the head off a gummy bear, nothing comes out. Also, it is soft, but holds its shape in all positions without any inherent wrinkling or rippling.
The current silicone gel implants, which have a round, eliptical shape, are filled with silicone that has a less cohesive consistency. The gel "flows" or can “bottom out” in the implant, so when the implant is in the vertical position, the gel flows to the bottom and the top/upper pole of the implant collapses. This leads to loss of upper-pole fullness and rippling, which may be visible and/or palpable. This is sometimes an advantage, but sometimes it is not. During your consultation for gummy bear breast implants at our Grand Rapids office, Dr. Bengtson will help you determine whether you are a good candidate for this implant.
The style 410 implant is made with silicone that has 3% more cross-linking, making it more viscous. The silicone does not flow; instead, it is form stable and has an anatomic, teardrop shape. This anatomically shaped implant maintains its shape in all positions. The shell does not fold. Thus the upper pole remains full even in the upright position, and there is minimal rippling.
Natrelle™ Style 410 Cohesive Gel “Gummy Bear” breast implants have opened up the option for Grand Rapids and Detroit patients who are looking for a non-operated, natural upper slope to their breast, a restoration of volume loss, but an appearance that almost seems they have not had a breast augmentation. This is why Allergan has launched its “Keep Them Guessing” campaign.
Gummy Bear Implants: What's the Difference?
All silicone gel breast implants used today are termed "cohesive." This is because they are more cohesive than the older silicone implants. However, a truly cohesive silicone implant is form stable and the Allergan Natrelle™ 410 Silicone Breast Implant is the most form stable and cohesive on the market today. It is the only implant that Shapes the Breast. In every other implant, the breast shapes the implant.
This difference brings several benefits:
- Early study results show a reduced incidence of leakage rates
- Less capsular contracture
- Less wrinkling & rippling
- Better maintenance of its shape
- Resistant to gravitational forces
- Creates a very natural upper breast contour
*Result may vary from person to person.
Breast Implant Options with the Allergan Natrelle™ 410 Silicone Implant
Allergan Natrelle™ 410 cohesive gel gummy bear breast implants come in 12 different core styles for our Grand Rapids patients, and each style has varying width, height, and projection. All implants come with an anatomical shape to match your natural body characteristics, and Dr. Bengtson is the only current office in West Michigan to have access to every projection style available.
Cohesive gel gummy bear breast implants work well for many of our Grand Rapids patients who have the following characteristics:
- First-time augmentation in thin patients with tight skin
- Patients looking for an “non-augmented” look with a natural, proportional breast to their body
- Patients with tight breasts and high folds where the breast is attached to your body
- Breast reconstruction
Allergan Natrelle™ cohesive gel gummy bear breast implants comes in a matrix of choices for our Grand Rapids patients. The implant height can be low, moderate, or full. This is the first letter. The projection can be low, moderate, full, or extra full. This is the second letter. Within each style, 410MF for example, there are many different volumes. The range of choices allows great flexibility, and Dr. Bengtson can customize the implant size and dimensions according to your personal dimensions and goals.

Why might I choose Natrelle® 410 style form stable “gummy bear” breast implants?
Today breast enhancement implants consistently increase the size of your breasts and bring your body into better proportion. The result for many women includes an increased self-confidence and a more positive body image. The Natrelle® 410 cohesive gel gummy bear breast implants provide our Grand Rapids patients with a natural shape and feel for your breast, with minimal implant palpability for a “one-breast feel.” We have approximately 200 different size options, allowing for selection of a specific implant based uniquely on a patient’s anatomy and desires.
Who is a candidate for Natrelle® 410 cohesive gel gummy bear breast implants at your Grand Rapids practice?
Although the mean age is about 35, women of various ages from 22 to 65 elect to have breast augmentation surgery, and each woman has unique reasons for making that choice. Breast asymmetry from birth, lack of proportional development, loss of volume after breastfeeding, and sagginess that may develop from gravity may all be reasons for choosing breast enhancement. The following factors generally define good candidates for breast augmentation procedures:
- You can clearly define why you want the surgery.
- You understand what breast implant surgery can and cannot accomplish.
- You accept the risks of breast surgery and your responsibilities as a patient.
- You are healthy, emotionally secure, and stable.
- You accept that you will need to make healthy lifestyle choices to maintain the results achieved by breast surgery.
- You do not have major breast sagginess.
- You have realistic expectations and are willing to accept minor asymmetries.
