Ultherapy® – Grand Rapids
An Uplift, not a Facelift! Ultherapy is a new type of non-surgical, non-invasive facelift procedure that uses ultrasound and the body’s own natural healing process to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin on the brow, neck, and under the chin. Dr. Brad Bengtson, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon has brought this new technology to Grand Rapids for his patients. In May 2012, the Today Show featured Kathie Lee Gifford receiving this ground breaking non-surgical facelift. Ultherapy is the first and only FDA-approved non-invasive device for structural tissue lifting and gives patients an exciting alternative for those seeking a lifted, youthful and refreshed appearance. Changes in our faces occur gradually over time and this technology gives patients the ability to tighten, lift and restore facial tissue - in a non-surgical way.
Now there’s a way to stand firm in the face of gravity—on your terms. With Ultherapy, there’s no downtime, no foreign substances, no radical change; just a healthy revving-up on the inside for a natural, noticeable effect on the outside.
With Ultherapy, you can go about your day after a single, 60-90 minute in-office procedure. You may notice a short-term “boost” but the natural process of creating new, more elastic, collagen builds over time—much like the effect that exercise has on building muscle (but without the multiple workouts!).
There’s always been surgery, but many Men and Women do not find that to be a solution for them. Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready for surgery. Results will unfold over the course of 2-3 months and some patients have reported continued improvement for up to 6 months.

What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a nonsurgical way to counteract the effects of time and gravity, by tightening and lifting skin tissue.
The beauty of Ultherapy; a 30 to 90 minute procedure that uses the body’s own subtle healing response to gently, gradually, and reliably restore memory to the skin and its underlying tissue.
How does the Ultherapy procedure work?
As with other ultrasound procedures, a smooth applicator placed upon your skin projects an image onto a screen that allows Dr. Bengtson to plan where the energy will be sent. This same applicator is then used to deliver low levels of focused heat at just the right depth below the skin. This achieves a positive effect, all the while leaving the surface of your skin undisturbed. Your skins response to the energy is to stimulate the growth of new collagen. A gradual tightening and firming occurs, resulting in a natural lift of the skin over time.
How is this procedure different than other cosmetic procedures?
Ultherapy is the only nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure that can specifically target and strengthen the deep foundational layer of tissue that doctors address in surgery. The ability to treat not just the skin but its underlying support, from the inside out, helps to ensure both safe and satisfying results with no downtime.
What does it feel like?
There can be some discomfort while the energy is being delivered, but it is temporary and a signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, and Dr. Bengtson and the Bengtson Center team will discuss options for making the experience as pleasant as possible. Patients typically leave comfortable and excited regarding the benefits to come!
What can I expect afterwards?
You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take. Your skin may appear a bit flushed immediately after the treatment, but any redness should disappear within a few hours. It is not uncommon to experience slight swelling for a few days following the procedure or tingling/tenderness to the touch for a few days to weeks following the procedure, but these are mild and temporary in nature. There is the possibility of other less common post-procedural effects, such as temporary small areas of bruising or numbness, which Dr. Bengtson will review with you.
Is Ultherapy safe?
Ultrasound energy has a proven track record, with use in the field of medicine for over 50 years and clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of this latest application.
What kind of results can I expect?
With just one treatment, the regenerative process is initiated, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months. Some patients may benefit from more than one treatment. Visible effects include a lifting and toning of loose skin. In the FDA clinical trial for instance, nine out of ten patients had a noticeable, significant lift of the brow line. This resulted in reduced skin laxity on the eyelid and a more open, youthful look to the eyes overall. Patients reported firmer, better-fitting skin in other areas of the face and neck as well. There is also an invisible result from the procedure with the creation of new collagen, which gives the skin its youthfulness.
Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?
A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone with skin that has "relaxed" to the point of looking and often feeling, less firm. A lowered brow line or sagging skin on the eyelids for instance is often the first sign of "maturing" skin. While it does not duplicate the results of surgery, Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery. Our new VECTRA® 3D imaging and simulation also provides an excellent eductaion tool allowing the patient to visually express their goals for this procedure.
