Considering a tummy tuck, but perhaps apprehensive about what to expect during recovery? Board-certified Grand Rapids cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Brad Bengtson and Dr. David Alfonso, are pleased to announce the introduction of a brand new post-operative pain relief system offered exclusively at the Bengtson Center: TAP Block. They apply the same ultrasound-based method used for screening breast implants to help detect where pain medication is needed during tummy tuck surgery. Patients are left with significantly reduced pain post surgery.

Before the surgery begins, injections are made for precise, preemptive pain management in the treatment site. The anesthetic numbs the muscle areas and provides long-lasting relief for up to 48 hours.

In a full tummy tuck operation, our surgeons make an initial incision along the bikini line, above the pubic area. The intention is to trim away unwanted skin and fat while tightening up the skin and tissue there and repairing the abdominal muscles. This results in a flatter, smoother, and leaner midriff. You're sure to be left dreaming of shopping trips and the next bikini season! On the downside, as you anticipate your newly toned appearance, some degree of discomfort and swelling is expected.

Some people are nervous about post-procedure discomfort - especially when they think about managing it with opioids. These are designed to effectively dull the perception of pain, but as awareness of the risks of addiction and overdose rises, patients have shown growing interest in reducing opioid use - or avoiding opioids altogether!

Speeding up the healing phase decreases the need for pain medications, as well as allowing for you to return to your day-to-day activities in less time.

Want to learn more about how the revolutionary TAP Block technique can improve tummy tuck pain management? The surgeons and staff at the Bengtson Center can help! Reach out to our practice by calling 616.588.8880 or submit info via our contact form.
