The FDA-approved CoolSculpting® device can destroy fat cells by selectively freezing them by extracting energy, which cools them. This revolutionary new body contouring treatment for men and women precisely targets the stubborn fat you want to lose. It is the coolest, most innovative way to lose love handles, muffin tops, spare tires, and other isolated pockets of fat that seem impossible to get rid of with diet and exercise alone, all in the matter of a lunch hour! The Bengtson Center also offers "Dual-Sculpting," using two CoolSculpting® machines simultaneously to cut your treatment times in half!
With CoolSculpting®, our Grand Rapids, Birmingham, and Detroit, Michigan, patients typically see a noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after just one visit, but you may appreciate even more fat reduction with additional treatments. CoolSculpting® Details & FAQ
Itís called stubborn fat for a reason! No matter how dedicated you are to eating well and exercising, you may have areas of fat that do not respond to weight loss and exercise. If so, you're not alone. In many patients, it's virtually impossible to lose that muffin top, those love handles, and the isolated pockets of fat that we were previously relegated to either live with or remove surgically.
CoolSculpting® has changed the game, and our Grand Rapids patients are taking advantage of this exciting new technology. Here's the skinny: Developed by Harvard scientists, CoolSculpting® is a patented, clinically proven procedure that freezes fat cells without damaging the skin, blood vessels, or nerves. There's no knife, suction hoses, needles, or lasers. This process is known as cryolipolysis, which works because the lipids in fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than does the water that fills other cells. It kills only select fat cells, which reduces the overall thickness of the targeted fat layer.
Immediately after CoolSculpting® treatments, most of our Grand Rapids, Birmingham, and Detroit patients get back to and on with their busy day.
Typically, our patients see a noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after just one visit. You can lose even more with additional appointments, and often two treatments are recommended at one-to three-month intervals. What does that mean? Simply put, your clothes start fitting better and you look better in a matter of weeks, and the improvement is enhanced even more with diet and exercise. Over the following few months, your body will naturally reduce the fat cells, leaving you feeling more like yourself again. It's totally non-surgical and FDA-cleared, and there's usually no downtime whatsoever, unless you consider reading a book or checking email during your appointment as downtime. How cool is that? What's more, you don't need to take pills or supplements, and as long as you maintain your weight with normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable.
What Will My CoolSculpting® Results Be?
Typically, each CoolSculpting® treatment results in a noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area. After being frozen, the fat cells enter what is known as an apoptotic death sequence, which unfolds over weeks or months. The method is a gentle one, with inflammatory cells breaking the fat cells down, then sending the lipids to be processed by the body's efficient lymphatic system. As the lipids leave, the thick fat layer will thin accordingly.
A medical study has shown that since this is a gradual process, with fat being slowly broken down, the loose lipids don't negatively impact the blood or harm the liver.
After the initial treatment is complete, you can attain further reductions with additional appointments, resulting in even more fat loss. Some patients, though, find that one treatment fully addresses their goals. During your consultation for CoolSculpting® at our Grand Rapids office, our highly skilled medical team will discuss and design a plan that suits you best. We are currently studying and following patients with Vectra 3-D imaging to specifically determine actual volume loss of fat with this technology.

How Does ZWave Enhance CoolSculpting® Results?
Though CoolSculpting® reduces fat in an area, it may be only one piece of your slimming-down puzzle. If you're seeking a truly sleek look, you should also talk to the Bengtson Center team about ZWave, which uses radial shockwaves to maximize results and tighten skin. The noninvasive ZWave can be applied as a standalone procedure, but itís particularly effective when paired with the fat-reduction power of CoolSculpting®. The Bengtson Center is the only practice in the Midwest that offers this powerful procedure.
A massage has been shown to further encourage the breakdown of unwanted fat cells after a round of cryolipolysis. Think of ZWave's shockwave as a powered-up version of that post-treatment massage. As the energy travels through tissue, it collapses bubbles found throughout the fat structures, ultimately destabilizing them.
The radial energy also improves blood flow and stimulates the formation of new collagen, both of which give skin a more youthful glow and elasticity, as well as reduce the appearance of stretch marks and more. Weak connective tissue is strengthened, firming up skin that was formerly loose and flabby. Like cryolipolysis, it can be used all over the body, including the abdomen, buttocks, arms, and thighs.
If you're struggling with cellulite, know that ZWave can also have a positive impact on the problem by breaking apart the connective strands that pull your skin down into undesirable dimples.
The Bengtson Center team is committed to pursuing the highest level of technology possible, pairing cutting-edge treatments and advanced techniques to deliver top-quality results.
What Happens During the CoolSculpting® Fat Reduction Treatment at the Grand Rapids Bengtson Center?
You and your team of CoolSculpting® experts first select the area or areas to be treated. Our CoolSculpting® specialist will position the device on the selected area of the body and then draw the bulge up between two cooling panels. You will feel a firm pull and pressure, enough to ensure the selected tissue will be cooled most efficiently.
During the treatment session, the applicator's sensors will constantly be monitoring the tissue between the panels, making automatic temperature adjustments as necessary to provide uniform results.
An hour or so later, depending on your needs, you will be able to go home, out to dinner, to your child's soccer game, or back to work.
What Does the CoolSculpting® Treatment Feel Like?
As the cooling goes to work in the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This quickly dissipates. Patients can then enjoy watching a movie, reading a good book, working on their laptop, or even taking a nap during their treatment.
Can I Return to Normal Activities After My CoolSculpting® Treatment in Grand Rapids?
Yes, you can. That is whatís so cool about CoolSculpting®. The procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often patients return to work after the session is over.
When Will I See Results?
You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, but you will experience the most dramatic results after two months. Your body will continue to flush fat cells for four to six months after your CoolSculpting® treatment.
What Are the Risks?
CoolSculpting® is a very safe procedure. There have been no reported cases of skin injury to date. A common side effect is temporary numbness. Since this is quite common, a clinical study was conducted and showed that the nerves were not injured. Numbness goes away after a reasonable period of time. Since this procedure releases fat into the body, some people have questioned whether this fat load in the blood and lymphatic system could cause harm. Again, extensive clinical research has shown that this is no concern. Your body is perfectly capable of handling the slow, steady release of fat, just as it does when we eat a meal. Occasionally some patients experience short-term tingling or mild pain, but this typically resolves in a few weeks.
Can CoolSculpting® Be Repeated?
Yes. Since a percentage of fat is removed with each treatment, additional treatments will be expected to give you better results. Most people do one to three treatments, separated by one to two months. Multiple repetitive, technician-dependent procedures are not required, and this technology is not painful.
Your medical provider will discuss with you the projected number of treatments to expect to achieve the results you want during your consultation.
Who is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting®?
The better question might be who is not a good candidate! If you are obese, gaining weight, not in control of your weight, or pregnant, this is not appropriate for you at this time. A lifestyle change is needed. The best candidates are within 25 or so pounds of their ideal body weight and have isolated bulges of fat. The lower belly and flanks are perfect examples. The nature of the device does not allow treatment of large areas without considerable time and expense.
Do I Need to Take Special Supplements or Follow a Strict Diet and Exercise Program?
No supplements or pills are required, and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits. Many patients feel more motivated to take care of themselves after the CoolSculpting® treatment. It's as though they get a second lease on their body and want to start anew by taking even better care of themselves.
How Long do the Results Last?
When you have your CoolSculpting® treatment, the affected fat cells are physically removed. As long as you maintain your weight with your normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable and you have your body back. This is similar to liposuction, which also physically removes fat cells from the body.
How Does CoolSculpting® Compare to Liposuction?
Liposuction offers near-immediate, dramatic results, considering that the unwanted fat is suctioned out of a target area in the span of a single session. The results from CoolSculpting® are definitely noticeable, but the change won't immediately stand out in stark contrast to your former figure. The cryolipolysis-based fat reduction is more gradual, but comes with few post-treatment healing requirements. Liposuction, on the other hand, may frequently be followed by antibiotics, compression garments, drainage tubes, and other items typically necessary for recovery after surgery. Dr. Brad Bengtson can speak with you during your consultation to determine which fat reduction method would best suit your individual goals, anatomy, and lifestyle.
How Much Does CoolSculpting® Cost at the Grand Rapids Bengtson Center?
The price for CoolSculpting® varies, depending on your areas of concern, the number of treatments needed, and your ultimate goals. The Bengtson Center team of experts will assess you in person to help estimate the cost and suggest areas of treatment.
