In May 2012, the TODAY Show featured Kathie Lee Gifford receiving this revolutionary procedure. The first and only FDA-approved non-invasive, non-surgical procedure for lifting structural tissue, Ultherapy gives our Grand Rapids area patients an exciting alternative for achieving a lifted, youthful, and refreshed appearance. Now there’s a way to stand firm in the face of gravity-on your own terms. With Ultherapy, there’s no downtime, no foreign substances, no radical change, just a healthy “revving-up” on the inside for a natural, noticeable effect on the outside.

Ultherapy is proving to be an appealing alternative for Grand Rapids, Birmingham, and Detroit men and women who either are not ready for facelift surgery or prefer a non-invasive, non-surgical option for lifting and tightening their facial skin. You may notice an immediate short-term “lift,” but the natural process of creating new, more elastic collagen builds over the course of 2 to 3 months. Some of our Grand Rapids Ultherapy patients have reported continued improvement for up to 6 months, and, similar to a facelift, most patients achieve results that last for many years.

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound, which passes through the skin to treat deep tissue. This nonsurgical procedure tightens and lifts skin tissue, counteracting the effects of time and gravity. The beauty of Ultherapy is that just one 30- to 90-minute procedure stimulates your own body’s subtle healing process to gently, gradually, and reliably restore elasticity and collagen to your skin and underlying tissues.

How does the Ultherapy procedure work?

As with other ultrasound procedures, a smooth applicator placed upon your skin projects an image onto a screen, allowing Dr. Bengtson or Dr. Alfonso to determine where to direct the energy. This same applicator then delivers low levels of focused heat at just the right depth below the skin, achieving a positive effect, while leaving your surface skin undisturbed. Your skin responds to the Ultherapy energy by stimulating the new collagen growth. A gradual tightening and firming occurs, resulting in a natural lift of the skin over the ensuing months.

What kind of results can Grand Rapids Ultherapy patients expect?

With just one Ultherapy treatment at our Grand Rapids practice, the regenerative process begins, but the full effect builds gradually over the course of 2 to 3 months. Some patients see optimal results from more than one treatment. Visible effects include a lifting and toning of loose skin.

In the FDA clinical trial, for instance, 90% of patients had a noticeable, significant lift of the brow line, leading to a reduction of skin laxity on the eyelid and a more open, youthful look to the eyes overall. These patients, as well as the Grand Rapids Ultherapy patients we’ve treated at our practice, also reported firmer skin in other areas of the face and neck. This procedure also delivers an invisible result: the creation of new collagen, which gives skin its youthfulness.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?

A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone with skin that has "relaxed" to the point of looking and often feeling less firm. A lowered brow line or sagging skin on the eyelids, for instance, is often the first sign of "maturing" skin.

While Ultherapy does not duplicate the results of facelift or brow lift surgery, it has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery. Our new VECTRA 3D imaging and simulation also provides an excellent education tool allowing the patient to visually express their goals for this procedure.

Your Treatment

How does Ultherapy differ from other cosmetic procedures?

Ultherapy is the only nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure that can specifically target and strengthen the deep foundational layer of tissue that doctors address in surgery. The ability to treat not just the skin but its underlying support, from the inside out, helps to ensure both safe and satisfying results with no downtime.

What does the treatment feel like?

Some patients experience temporary discomfort while the energy is being delivered. However, this signals that the collagen-building process has begun. Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, and Dr. Bengtson or Dr. Alfonso and the Bengtson Center team will discuss options for making the experience as pleasant as possible. Patients typically leave comfortable and excited about the benefits to come!

What can I expect afterwards?

You will be able to return to normal activities immediately, without taking any special precautions. Your skin may appear mildly flushed, but any redness should disappear within a few hours.

You may also experience slight swelling for a few days following the procedure or tingling/tenderness to the touch for a few days to weeks, but these are mild, temporary side effects. During your consultation, Dr. Bengtson or Dr. Alfonso will thoroughly discuss these with you, as well as uncommon post-procedural effects, such as temporary small areas of bruising or numbness.
