There are many factors that can contribute to the development of eye bags and dark circles under the eyes. Food or dust allergies, oversleeping as well as lack of sleep, and temporary conditions such as extreme fatigue, may all be factors that contribute to this condition.
In many cases, these factors produce a temporary condition that may be treated with simple home remedies such as getting more rest or using warm or cool compresses to alleviate inflammation around the eyes. In cases where extra fat below the eyes create dark circles and shadowing pose a more permanent problem, however, there may be other factors at work, such as the aging process, heredity, hormonal imbalances, fluid retention, underlying sinus infections, conditions affecting the thyroid or kidneys, iron deficiency, and lifestyle habits such as excessive consumption of caffeine, and smoking.
Working long hours in front of a computer screen can also cause eyestrain, which in turn produces unsightly eye bags and dark circles under the eyes. The aging process is a major culprit, as it naturally causes eye bags and circles to develop under the eyes of many mature men. As we age, we lose fat in our facial features, and our bodies diminish their natural production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, which typically causes the skin to become lax and thin.
This can lead to the appearance of additional bulging fat under the eyes or sagging bags, and reddish-blue blood vessels underneath the eyes become more prominent, as well as puffy or drooping eyelids, and/or dark hollows that appear under the eyes beneath the bulging fat. In some cases, the tendency to develop eye bags and circles may be hereditary, and the problem is more prominent among darker-skinned individuals from ethnic groups that have a greater tendency to develop hyperpigmentation.
