Our lip lift surgery is performed by one of our expert, board-certified Grand Rapids plastic surgeons, Dr. Brad Bengtson or Dr. David Alfonso, at our in-house surgical center. This procedure is usually performed using local anesthetic and is an outpatient surgery. During the surgery, tiny incisions are made in the crease under the nostrils, and a small strip of skin is removed. Then, the skin is lifted towards the nose, which shortens the length between the upper lip and nose, creating the appearance of a turned-up or lifted top lip. The surgery usually takes about an hour.
After your lip lift surgery, you will likely experience some bruising and swelling around the treated area. This will be most pronounced after the surgery and will gradually subside, with most of the swelling resolved after about two weeks. During this time, you should apply cold compresses to the area to alleviate discomfort, and you can take over-the-counter pain medications to help you monitor your pain levels. In addition, you should avoid activities that could aggravate the incisions and refrain from smoking for at least two weeks.
Your lip lift surgery will have some slight scarring underneath the nose, though, with proper care of the incisions, this will be minimal and will fade to a barely perceptible fine line.
At the end of two weeks, the majority of the swelling will have dissipated. At this time, you will begin to see your results, with your lips appearing more lifted, fuller, and youthful.
