Chemical Peels in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Chemical peels at the Grand Rapids TransforMD Skin & Laser Center can reduce uneven pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and scarring, leading to an overall improvement in the quality and appearance of your skin. Chemical peels treat the skin uniformly and at varying depths, utilizing a variety of different chemicals such as Vitamin C/Ascorbic Acid, Trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and many others. Our expert aestheticians will individually evaluate your skin and skin type and sensitivities and help you select the best potential agent and safest outcome unique to you.

To maintain the results from your chemical peel, licensed aestheticians at our Grand Rapids office can recommend a daily skincare routine using medical-grade skin care products. Microdermabrasion and other laser skin care treatments can work beautifully to complement the results of a chemical peel for our Birmingham and Grand Rapids patients.

  • During regular hours, walk-in appointments are available to existing clients and new patients, but if you prefer to prearrange your visit for a chemical peel at our Grand Rapids office, request your appointment online or phone us at 616.588.8880.

Chemical Peels for Grand Rapids and Birmingham: What Are the Options?

Below are some of the customizable chemical peel options we offer.

ZO® 3-Step Peel

The three-step peel from ZO Skin Health is an innovative treatment that helps reduce the visible signs of acne, fine lines, enlarged pores, melasma and other hyperpigmentation, rough or uneven texture, and dullness. The ZO® 3-Step Peel contains a combination of retinol, exfoliants, and multi-action agents that visibly benefit skin health and target the early signs of aging. While improving the skin's regeneration abilities, it also provides antioxidant protection and is an anti-irritant.

The VI Peel: Details & FAQs

The VI Peel contains a synergistic blend of powerful ingredients suitable for all skin types. This chemical peel can improve the tone, texture, and clarity of the skin; reduce or eliminate age spots, freckles, and hyper-pigmentation, including melasma; soften lines and wrinkles; clear acne; reduce or eliminate acne scars; and stimulate the production of collagen, for firmer, more youthful skin. VI Peel also works well in conjunction with laser treatments and injectable dermal fillers, and it can improve the skin’s appearance following a surgical facial procedure. This chemical peel provides dramatic results for our Grand Rapids patients with virtually no pain, no skin preparation, and little downtime. Enjoy radiant, younger-looking skin in about a week!

What is a VI Peel?

The VI Peel is designed to reverse the signs of aging and sun damage on the skin. VI Peel contains a synergistic blend of gentle yet powerful ingredients suitable for all skin types. The actual application only takes minutes.

How many chemical peels can you do and how far apart should they be done?

Chemical peels, for most of our Grand Rapids patients, should be scheduled three to four times a year to repair sun damage that is already present, and to avoid permanent scarring for those affected by acne.

The skincare experts at TransforMD Laser & Skin Center can help you determine the frequency of the chemical peel, which depends on various factors. For some Grand Rapids patients with extremely damaged skin, the VI Peel can initially be done once a month to obtain quicker desired results.

How is the VI Peel different from other chemical peels?

Obsolete chemical peels of the past, without exception, epitomize the “no pain, no gain” approach to skin care. Before VI Peel, deep, painful chemical peels with extended recovery yielded the best results. Now, however, VI Peel offers the first Next-Generation Aesthetic. Essentially painless in its application, this chemical peel produces dramatic visible results in just days with little downtime.

How many chemical peels are required to show an improved look?

Skin Chemical Peel

A single VI Peel will achieve significant repair and add a healthy glow to the skin. It offers truly restorative, painless repair of damaged skin, including sun damage and acne. Best of all, it effectively prevents premature signs of aging for younger skin with no visible damage.

Will results be long lasting?

Like everything else in life, skin needs maintenance. The VI Peel’s results will last as long as skin care is maintained, sun exposure is moderate, and preventive aging with the VI Peel is performed four times per year.

What types of skin respond well to the VI Peel?

The many innovations that created the VI Peel combine to enable the entire continuum of skin types to enjoy the benefits of the chemical peel. At our Grand Rapids practice, many of our first-time, African-American, Asian, and Latin skin types can experience anti-aging and restorative skin care previously unavailable.

How much preconditioning of the skin is required?

The VI Peel requires no preconditioning of the skin associated with older-generation chemical peels that can take three to five months.

Do chemical peels burn?

Most chemical peels do not really burn. Some of our Birmingham and Grand Rapids patients have reported feeling a slight stinging sensation for a few seconds, which completely and almost immediately subsides. The peel is applied topically and numbing of the skin takes place after the first pass. Some patients may feel more comfortable using a fan or cold air breeze.

How badly will I peel?

The skin peeling associated with the VI Peel is a light, fluffy peel that will start within 48 hours of the treatment, with the biggest peel days being three, four, and five. Generally, the peel reduces to light flaking on days seven through 10. The peeling is easily hidden by moisturizer. In some cases, the peel is virtually invisible. Patients using Retin-A may experience heavier peeling. Your aesthetician can modify your chemical peel at our Grand Rapids office to produce a deeper, more aggressive peel, if necessary, depending on your skin condition.

What will I look like right after the VI Peel and during the next few days?

The skin will look slightly tan, yellow, or red immediately after the chemical peel. On days one and two, most of our Grand Rapids patients report that their skin feels slightly tighter, with no visible signs of having had a peel. Any pigmented areas might appear slightly darker. On approximately day three, you will begin to peel. The first signs of peeling usually begin around the mouth area and continue for a day or two. With the use of the VI Derm moisturizer, you may go about your usual daily routine. By day six or seven, you will be done peeling and the results will be dramatic! If a more aggressive chemical peel is performed, a secondary peel might occur around day seven.

What about normal activities after the VI Peel?

There are no restrictions. Normal activities can be resumed immediately after your chemical peel at the Grand Rapids TransforMD Skin & Laser Center.

What will the VI Peel do for my skin?

The VI Peel uses the synergy of all available and known modes of action of various acids to produce a multitude of positive effects. It tackles skin problems at the cellular level rather than just burning skin off. Thanks to the concerted actions of its many acids and vitamins, it will help erase fine lines and wrinkles, shrink enlarged pores and build collagen and elastin, which tighten skin. It is extremely effective in practically eliminating hyper-pigmentation including melasma, the most difficult pigmentation issue to address. In addition, this chemical peel provides excellent results for our Birmingham or Grand Rapids area patients with acne.

Can I wear makeup after the VI Peel?

While the long-term goal is to eliminate the need to use any makeup, it may be worn at any time after the chemical peel solution has dried. On the days that the skin is peeling, you should apply only moisturizer, not makeup. Makeup can then be resumed at any time after the skin has finished peeling.

What about the hands or chest?

The VI Peel is incredibly effective in removing sunspots from the hands and chest and eliminating the wrinkles associated with sun damage on the décolletage.

How long will the VI Peel take?

Your appointment will take only about 20 minutes.

What kind of final results will I see after a single VI Peel?

It takes about four days after you finish peeling for the skin to return to its normal pH and to see the final effects. The skin will look luminous and glowing. Hyper-pigmentation will be improved or gone, depending on the amount of damage. Tone and texture will be improved, and you should see an overall more youthful appearance.

Seminars Specials

Does the VI Peel make the skin thinner?

No. By sloughing off the old skin, forcing the body to recreate new skin at a faster rate in a sequence faster than its own rate, chemical peels actually encourage the skin to thicken, stimulating the underlying structure to make more collagen and elastin.

Will my skin be more sensitive after the VI Peel?

The skin will only be more sensitive, if at all, during the peeling process itself. You may experience up to four days of sensitivity until pH of the skin is replenished.

Will the VI Peel tighten neck skin?

The skin on the neck responds well. The VI Peel has proven to help improve texture and quality with gradual softening of the lines and some tightening effects.

What other areas can the VI Peel be performed on?

Face, neck, hands and chest all respond well to a VI Peel.

Can I go in the sun after the VI Peel?

Sun exposure should be limited and adequate protection with SPF 30 should be used. However, the VI Peel was created to be practical. The only days where exposure to the sun should be seriously avoided are days three and four, when the skin is peeling, to avoid uneven exposure. After that, you can enjoy moderate sun exposure, continuing regular skin care maintenance.

What about exercise after the VI Peel?

Again, the VI Peel was created to be practical. We only ask that the solution be left on the skin for five hours prior to exercising, washing it off immediately before commencing exercise.

Can cold sore sufferers have a VI Peel?

Of course. In some cases, the physician may recommend pre-medication prior to the peel. If you break out with a sudden cold sore the day of your chemical peel, often the VI Peel will eliminate the sore and medication may be started concomitantly.

Are teenage acne sufferers too young for the VI Peel and would it help their acne?

This chemical peel is excellent for both adult and adolescent Grand Rapids patients who suffer from acne. Results are quick and very impressive. Combined with a daily skin regimen, almost all acne cases can be readily and safely managed.

Does this chemical peel help Grand Rapids and Birmingham patients treat precancerous cells?

Yes, the VI Peel, like many other chemical peels, helps to remove precancerous cells. Of course, those with a history of skin cancer should consult with Dr. Bengtson on a regular basis.

How many treatments will I need?

We recommend a course of six chemical peels to achieve the best results. After this, you can have a chemical peel at regular intervals as part of your ongoing skin care program.

Are chemical peels painful?

All you’ll feel is a mild tingling sensation as the peeling agent gets to work on your skin.
