Wrinkles and folds on the face do not appear suddenly overnight. Typically, they start as faint lines that grow more noticeable and deepen as time goes by.
Restylane is a collection of FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers designed to restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. At Symmetry Med Spa by Bengtson Center, our Master Injectors offer two versions of Restylane — Refyne and Defyne — with a focus on maintaining natural facial proportions and expressions.

Restylane is a family of injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers manufactured by Galderma. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your skin that attracts and retains moisture. As you age, your body produces less HA, which contributes to the formation of wrinkles, hollow areas, dehydration, and loss of facial definition.
Restylane was the first HA filler to receive FDA approval in the United States (2003). The product line has since expanded to include formulations developed for specific treatment areas and concerns. According to Galderma, over 50 million Restylane treatments have now been performed worldwide. It is one of the most extensively studied and trusted filler brands available.
How Does Restylane® Work?
Skin loses its elasticity over time, with hyaluronic acid levels dropping as you age. Since hyaluronic acid is responsible for keeping skin well hydrated and pliant, its loss leads to the development of wrinkles. Restylane is a dermal filler that serves in place of that lost hyaluronic acid by adding volume and moisture to specific areas in the skin.
Once injected, Restylane "fills in" creases and lines, giving skin a smoother and more youthful look. It can also be used for lip injections to give lips a rounder and fuller look.
What Can Restylane® Treat?
In the mouth and nose area, there are two primary places where large lines can develop. Nasolabial folds form between the sides of the nose and corners of the mouth, while marionette lines extend from the corners of the mouth down to the chin. The fillers in the Restylane family are good for a variety of uses, including:
Keep your skin hydrated with a moisturizer that contains cholesterol and fatty acids, and avoid moisturizers with a lot of water.
A daily moisturizer or a foundation with SPF will help provide protection from ultraviolet rays that damage your skin.
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids keep skin moisturized.
During sleep, your skin has time to recuperate and can add longevity to collagen in your dermis. Sleep on your back to avoid pressure on your skin.
Cold weather and alcohol can also dry your skin.
Antioxidants found in avocados, pomegranates and green tea extract help repair damaged skin.
Restylane’s Refyne and Defyne fillers are made with something known as XpresHAn Technology™, which cross-links hyaluronic acid molecules to create a gel that supports natural-looking results that allow for a full range of expressions after your treatment. You will still look like yourself as you smile, frown, and laugh.

The filler itself is only half of the treatment equation. Your choice of injector is also an important factor, because beautiful results require someone who is knowledgeable, experienced, and talented.
At Symmetry Med Spa by Bengtson Center, all injectable treatments are performed by Aesthetic Expert-Master Injectors who receive ongoing training and work under the supervision of our board-certified plastic surgeons.
We're happy to say we have not just one, but several Master Injectors on our team, each one with extensive training from national-level injectors. They worked hard to earn their Aesthetic Expert distinction, which the Bengtson Center gives only to those who have an eye for harmonious, natural-looking results—and the practical skill to achieve them.
Meet Our InjectorsToday's cosmetic dermal fillers are becoming more and more targeted, creating ever more natural and subtle approaches to a beautiful, youthful appearance. In the hands of Drs. Bengtson, Alfonso and Horriat and the Master Injectors at the Bengtson Center, the range of different fillers available is like an artist choosing from an array of different paintbrushes. Each one can be carefully chosen to craft your most natural and beautiful results.
Aside from Defyne and Refyne from Restylane, our Master Injectors are also experienced administering dermal filler from other lines, including the popular JUVÉDERM family, which includes Voluma for adding volume to the cheeks and Volbella for plumping up lips, and the newer RHA fillers.
All of these fillers can be combined with each other and other injectable treatments, such as BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport, to rejuvenate the face as a whole. This technique is often called a liquid facelift. While minimally invasive treatments with temporary effects cannot duplicate the results of a surgical facelift, they are a long-lasting solution for patients who want to appear more refreshed, but are not ready to commit to surgery.

The Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery has been a leader in aesthetic medicine in West Michigan for over 25 years. We've helped patients from Grand Rapids, throughout Michigan, and across the country achieve results that look authentically beautiful.
Our practice has maintained Allergan Top 100 and Black Diamond status for over a decade, recognition reserved for the top 1% of aesthetic practices nationwide. While Restylane is a Galderma product, this distinction reflects the volume and quality of injectable work performed at our practice.
Injectable treatments are available at both our Grand Rapids location and our Byron Center location. Both offer the same exceptional care and access to top Restylane products.
Restylane results typically last 6–18 months, depending on the product used. Refyne and Defyne can last up to 12 months with proper injection technique and maintenance. Fillers used in high-movement areas (like the lips) tend to metabolize faster than those in relatively static areas (like the cheeks).
Both are hyaluronic acid fillers manufactured by reputable companies (Galderma and Allergan, respectively).
Restylane products use NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) technology or XpresHAn Technology. Juvéderm products use Vycross and Hylacross technologies.
Neither brand is objectively better. The right choice depends on your treatment plan. Our Michigan medical spas offer both Restylane and Juvéderm products, allowing your provider to select whichever will produce the most natural and lasting result for your concerns.
Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles (lines that form when you make expressions). Restylane is a filler that adds volume to smooth static wrinkles (lines present even when your face is at rest) and sculpt facial contours. Many patients benefit from combining these treatments.
Results are visible immediately, though you'll notice some initial swelling that typically resolves within 1–2 weeks. Most patients see their final results by 14 days post-injection.
Restylane has over 20 years of clinical data supporting its safety and efficacy. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your body, and Restylane products are biocompatible and fully reversible with hyaluronidase if needed.
Long-term studies show Restylane maintains an excellent safety profile over multiple treatments. There is no evidence of cumulative long-term risks when it’s administered by qualified providers like our Master Injectors.
Most patients describe the sensation of Restylane injections as mild pressure or a slight pinch. All our Restylane products contain lidocaine to minimize discomfort. We can also apply topical numbing cream for additional comfort.
We recommend waiting at least 12–24 hours before you apply makeup to minimize infection risk at the injection sites.
You can return to most of your normal activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, alcohol, blood-thinning medications and excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga, hot tubs) for 24–48 hours to minimize bruising. You should also avoid touching or massaging the treated areas.
Some unevenness or small lumps can occur in the first few days after treatment, particularly with lip filler. Most of the time, they resolve on their own. If lumps last longer than two weeks, contact our office. We can assess whether the filler needs adjustment or dissolution with hyaluronidase.
Yes. One of the great advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers, and a major reason for their popularity, is reversibility. If you're unhappy with your results or experience a complication, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve the filler within 24–48 hours.
The cost of a Restylane treatment depends on which product is used, which area is treated, and how many syringes are needed. The only accurate way to determine your cost is through a consultation. During this visit, we will provide an exact quote based on the volume needed to achieve your goals.
XpresHAn Technology is Galderma's proprietary cross-linking method. Cross-linking is the "glue" that binds hyaluronic acid together into a gel.
High cross-linking creates a firm, sturdy gel that’s good for "lifting" areas like the cheeks or chin. Low cross-linking creates a soft, flexible gel used for delicate areas that move a lot, like the lips.
Fillers made with XpresHAn Technology are designed to stretch and flex with your facial movements so they don’t look stiff in high-movement areas.
Restylane requires no formal downtime. Most patients can go right back to work or whatever else their day has in store.
However, you may experience some swelling, redness or bruising at the injection sites for a few days. For this reason, we recommend scheduling your Restylane treatments a week or two before any important events.
Absolutely. We encourage you to browse our before and after galleries for facial fillers and lip fillers to see real patient results from injectable treatments performed at Symmetry Med Spa. These images show what's achievable with skilled injection technique and artistic treatment planning.
