Recovery after a breast lift is a journey, and though it looks different for every patient, there is one thing all have in common: hope for the smoothest, most comfortable recovery possible.
Our top priority is that you feel safe and supported throughout your experience with the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery. With this mission in mind, Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso and Dr. Horriat employ advanced recovery protocols designed to return our patients to full health as quickly as possible, with less pain and fewer restrictions. Together with their team, they prioritize education to ensure you are fully prepared for what comes after your surgery and what you can do to help ensure the best results.
This guide answers some of the most common questions we hear from breast lift patients before and after their procedure.
Your breast lift will be performed at the New Vista Surgical Center, our on-site QUAD A-accredited facility. After the procedure, you will wake up in the recovery suite. You will feel groggy, and some nausea from the anesthesia is common. Your breasts will be wrapped in a supportive surgical dressing or compression garment.
Our team will monitor you until you are stable and comfortable. At that point (usually within a couple of hours), you will be cleared to go home. A responsible adult will need to drive you and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. This is not optional, so plan ahead for the assistance you will need.
Yes, a breast lift is an outpatient procedure, so you'll return home the same day. If you're traveling from outside Grand Rapids for your procedure, our concierge team can help you make hotel arrangements.
Breast lift surgery typically involves one to two weeks away from work and regular routines. You may gradually resume light activities as tolerated. Around week six, most physical restrictions are lifted, including full workouts and heavy lifting. Final results are visible three to six months after the procedure, and scars continue to mature for 12-18 months.
Dr. Bengtson developed the Fast-Trak Recovery Program to reduce downtime for breast surgery patients. With this protocol, more than 90% of our breast augmentation patients return to normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours. The same protocol is applied to breast lift procedures by all three of our board-certified plastic surgeons.
With the 24-Hour Fast-Track Recovery Program, our surgeons use techniques that minimize trauma to the breast tissue and therefore reduce post-operative discomfort. This allows 90% of our patients to recover comfortably without narcotic pain medicine.
Days two and three after surgery tend to be the worst, with tightness and soreness across the chest. After that, the discomfort improves daily. If your pain feels unmanageable or different from what you expected at any point, reach out to our team for guidance.
Your surgeon will give you detailed, personalized incision care instructions before you leave our office. In general, incision care after a breast lift involves keeping the sites clean and dry and applying any prescribed topical treatments as directed. Avoid anything that could irritate or put tension on the healing skin.
If you notice anything unusual at your incision sites, such as increasing redness, warmth, discharge or an odor, contact our office right away.
Most patients are cleared to shower 48 hours after surgery. When you do shower, use lukewarm water and let it run over your incisions gently. Don't aim the showerhead directly at your incision lines, and don't scrub. Pat the area dry with a clean towel.
Avoid baths, hot tubs, swimming pools and saunas until your surgeon confirms your incisions have healed enough. Submerging healing incisions in standing water increases the risk of infection.
Sleep on your back in a slightly elevated position for the first few weeks. Side sleeping and stomach sleeping are off-limits during early recovery because both put pressure on your healing tissues. Sleeping on a wedge pillow or a couple of firm pillows stacked on top of each other reduces swelling, keeps pressure off your incisions and makes it less likely that you'll roll onto your side during the night.
Your surgeon will let you know when it's safe to transition back to your preferred sleeping position. Most patients find they can resume side sleeping after about four to six weeks.
Swelling after a breast lift is completely normal and expected. It's part of your body's healing response. The majority of visible swelling resolves within the first few weeks, though minor swelling can persist for several months.
These are a few steps you can take to minimize swelling:
For the first six weeks (or until your surgeon clears you), avoid vigorous exercise, heavy lifting and any movement that engages your chest muscles.
Avoid smoking and nicotine products, as these constrict blood vessels and significantly impair wound healing. Limit alcohol, particularly if you're taking prescription pain medication.
Skip underwire bras, tight clothing that pulls over your head and anything that creates friction across your incision lines. It's best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that zips, snaps or buttons in front.
Our team will place you in a surgical support bra immediately after your procedure. You should continue to wear it or something similar as directed by your surgeon (typically for several weeks).
Avoid underwire bras for at least six weeks. The wire sits directly over areas where breast lift incisions are commonly placed, and pressure on the healing tissue can irritate or compromise the incision line. Your surgeon will tell you when it's safe to transition back to regular bras.
Your surgeon will choose the incision pattern based on the degree of lift desired. Some patients require only an incision around the areola (periareolar incision), while others need a vertical incision from the areola to the breast crease (lollipop incision), or an additional incision along the crease (anchor incision). Your surgeon will discuss which technique is right for you during your consultation.
Scars go through a maturation process. Initially, they will be pink or red and may look slightly raised. This is normal. Over time, most scars gradually become softer, flatter and lighter in color. Full maturation takes 12 to 18 months.
The most effective things you can do for scar healing are simple: follow your surgeon's incision care instructions, protect your scars from sun exposure and be patient with the maturation process.
Your surgeon may recommend using silicone-based scar sheets, which have strong clinical evidence supporting their effectiveness. Keep in mind that some widely marketed scar products, such as vitamin E oil, have limited evidence behind them.
If you'd like to improve the appearance of your scars after they have fully matured, Symmetry Med Spa by Bengtson Center offers treatments such as laser resurfacing and SkinPen® microneedling that can reduce the visibility of surgical scars.
