In the nineties and noughties, full busts were in. Celebrities like Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Jenny McCarthy and Anna Nicole Smith exemplified the era's bigger-is-better ideology. The look was often unashamedly artificial, with eye-popping cleavage and a "bolted-on" appearance.
Today's women are asking for something different. The ideal breast augmentation is now smaller and more natural. Patients want results that are proportional for their frame and comfortable for an active, modern lifestyle.
On social media, terms like "yoga breasts" and "ballerina breasts" are trending. Though the vocabulary is new, the idea behind it is anything but. Natural-looking breast augmentation has been our specialty at the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery since the beginning.
Ballerina breasts, yoga breasts, small breast augmentation and similar terms refer to the same thing: a breast augmentation that prioritizes subtlety and balance over maximum volume. Typically, this means choosing a smaller implant or a non-implant technique. The result should complement a patient's figure rather than dominate it.
If you're considering breast augmentation, this approach may be right for you if:
The natural look has always been popular, especially here in the Midwest, but there are a few reasons it's now trending on the national stage.
The early to mid-2010s were the heyday of the BBL. The "Instagram baddie" aesthetic favored a full-hips, tiny-waist silhouette, and stars like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez made the curvaceous look mainstream.
As wellness culture became more aspirational than nightclub culture, aesthetic preferences evolved. The ideal figure is now less extreme. People want to look lean, fit and balanced.
In fashion and beauty, tastemakers have adopted "old money" or "quiet luxury" aesthetics that emphasize tastefulness over extravagance. The popular "clean girl" look embraced minimalism and effortless, understated elegance.
In medical aesthetics, we see the same trend. Overfilled "duck lips" and plump "pillow face" are out. Subtle fillers, and even dissolving fillers, are in. For plastic surgery patients, there has been a rise in requests for BBL reductions, mini facelifts, small-volume breast augmentations, breast fat transfer, breast implant removal and breast reductions.
Fitness culture is more mainstream than it has ever been. Running, yoga, pilates, CrossFit, Hyrox… exercise is not a niche hobby anymore. It's a lifestyle and a source of community. For active women, a smaller implant is simply more practical.
The explosion of GLP-1 weight loss medications has reshaped body ideals almost as much as it has reshaped bodies. Slimmer, more athletic frames are now accessible to more of the population. Large implants are less desirable on these leaner physiques.
Today's plastic surgery patients arrive at their consultations with more knowledge than any previous generation. Between Reddit threads, RealSelf reviews and influencers sharing their aesthetic journeys on social media, patients are better educated about the potential complications of breast augmentation and learning that larger implants carry higher risk for some of these outcomes.
This awareness is a good thing. It means patients are asking better questions and making more informed decisions about what they want long-term, not just what looks good in a photo today.
There are several ways to achieve a natural and proportionate breast augmentation result. Depending on where you're starting and what you want to achieve, these are some of the options to consider:
Small breast implants add one to two cup sizes while staying in proportion with your frame. These are typically in the 150 to 275cc range, though the right size is ultimately determined by your measurements and personal taste, not a number.
Small implants are lighter and more comfortable during physical activity, as well as less likely to experience the complications that can come with larger, heavier implants. For many women seeking that "ballerina breast" or "designer breast augmentation" look, this is a great starting point.
At the Bengtson Center, we offer Motiva® implants, a newer option that feels softer and more natural than traditional silicone gel. Their Ergonomix® design moves with your body rather than holding a fixed shape, and their SmoothSilk® surface produces almost no scar capsule, which means a more natural look and feel even if you don’t have much natural tissue coverage.
Fat transfer breast augmentation uses liposuction to harvest fat from areas like the abdomen, flanks or thighs and reinjects it into the breasts. The results look and feel natural because it's all your own tissue. There is no implant to feel or see.
Fat transfer can add roughly one cup size. Not all transferred fat survives (typically 60–80% does), so the results are less predictable than implants. You also need enough donor fat to make it work, which rules out very lean patients. For most patients who want a modest size increase with no surgical device involved, it's an excellent option.
A hybrid approach pairs a smaller implant with fat grafting. The implant provides slightly more enhancement than fat transfer can, and the fat smooths the edges to conceal the implant. It's a good middle ground for patients who want more volume than they could achieve with fat transfer alone but still want results that look and feel as natural as possible.
At the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, we've helped more than 20,000 patients from all 50 states and around the world. But our home is here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and our approach has always been rooted in a Midwest aesthetic that favors natural and proportional results.
VECTRA® 3D imaging is one of the most valuable parts of your breast augmentation consultation at our practice. It lets you see simulated results on your own body so you can make informed decisions about the implants you want and align with your surgeon. If you're weighing the 'how big is too big?' question, or wondering whether a smaller implant will give you enough of a change, VECTRA® can help you decide.
