Summer asks a lot of you. There are weekends on Lake Michigan, weddings, graduation celebrations, reunions, picnics, hiking adventures, pool parties and more time outdoors between Memorial Day and Labor Day than the rest of the year combined.
It makes sense that this is when many of us are thinking about a treatment or two. But while many options fit well into the warmer months, a few are better left until fall.
Here's an overview of which is which, so you can plan with confidence.
Summer means stronger UV exposure, increased heat, higher humidity and more time spent outdoors. All of this affects how your skin heals and how it responds to aesthetic treatments.
When we're deciding what to recommend for you at this time of year, we're weighing a handful of practical considerations. A summer-friendly aesthetic treatment generally checks these boxes:
The good news is that plenty of treatments meet these criteria. For the ones that don't, your provider can recommend a longer-term treatment plan that builds towards those treatments in the fall and winter.
The recommendation that laser treatments be avoided in summertime is outdated.
Some of that caution made sense years ago, when the available technology was less forgiving, but many modern laser and light treatments are designed with year-round use in mind. They can be used in summer as long as your provider chooses the right protocol and you commit to caring for your skin properly before and after the treatment.
To ensure a laser or light treatment is safe for your summer skin:
In the treatment room, the Symmetry team will:
With all of these things in place, we can administer laser treatments in summer without compromising on your safety or results.
Options: Botox®, Dysport®, Daxxify®
Wrinkle-relaxing injectables are the easiest "yes" of the season. There's no sun restriction and no recovery to speak of, so you can treat your lines on a Tuesday and be at a barbecue that weekend without anyone being the wiser.
Options: Juvéderm®, Restylane®, RHA®
Like neurotoxins, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers require no sun restriction or meaningful downtime. Summer is a perfectly comfortable time to soften static lines or enhance your lips, cheeks, jawline, temples or under-eyes.
Few treatments suit summer as naturally as a Hydrafacial™. It cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates your skin with zero downtime, which makes it equally good as preparation before a special event or a reset after a sun-soaked vacation.
Microneedling creates small injuries in the skin to trigger a natural collagen-building response. It is summer-safe because it is not a chemical or light-based treatment that increases photosensitivity, though we do still recommend sun protection afterward.
MOXI™ is the laser we're most comfortable recommending in summer for the right candidate. It's a gentle, non-ablative fractional laser that carries a lower risk of hyperpigmentation and is tolerated by most skin types, even when the UV index is high.
GlowTox™ pairs a VI Peel® with a neurotoxin treatment for brighter, smoother skin and softened lines in one appointment. It’s a favorite for clients who want a refreshed look before an occasion.
If summer is the season you dread because of sweat, you may have hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Botox® can be placed in the underarms to interrupt the nerve signals that switch on your sweat glands. Results can last as long as six months.
A chemical peel works by removing the top layers of skin, which leaves it temporarily more sensitive to light. Sun exposure during that healing window increases the risk of uneven pigmentation and can undo the improvement you were after.
Laser treatments at the more intensive end of the spectrum are usually better saved for cooler months. Not only does this give your sensitive skin time to heal away from the sun, but stronger MOXI™ and BBL® treatments are great for sun damage, brown spots and redness, the very things summer might have left you wanting to treat come autumn.
