Congratulations on your weight loss journey! Losing weight with GLP-1 medication is an exciting accomplishment. You deserve to celebrate your new body and enjoy the renewed health and confidence that come with it.

But what if reaching your goals doesn't leave you with the body you expected?

Following significant weight loss, many people struggle with loose, hanging abdominal skin that causes discomfort and conceals the slimmer midsection underneath. Often, patients say they feel fitter and more energetic than they have in a long time, but they are not yet satisfied with their physical transformation. The excess skin makes it feel like they are still partially inhabiting their old body.

At the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons offer abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) after GLP-1 weight loss to remove loose skin so you can fully enjoy the body you've worked so hard for.

Why Does Weight Loss Cause Loose Skin?

Skin is adaptive and resilient. As we grow, it grows with us.

The same thing happens when we gain weight. Our skin expands by creating new skin cells to accommodate the larger frame of our bodies. The more weight we gain, the more our skin stretches, and the more stress is placed on the collagen and elastin fibers that give it elasticity.

Unfortunately, losing weight doesn't reverse this process in equal measure. Fat cells shrink relatively quickly, but the skin that expanded to cover those fat cells cannot contract at the same pace. If it has been stretched far enough for long enough, it may never "snap back" to its original shape.

GLP-1 patients may face a particular challenge due to the speed of weight loss when using the medication. With gradual weight loss, the skin has more time to adjust to the shrinking body. GLP-1 medications tend to produce faster results than diet and exercise, which is part of what makes them so effective and appealing, but it also means the skin has less opportunity to keep pace.

Will Loose Skin After GLP-1 Weight Loss Go Away on Its Own?

Sometimes, partially. But for many people who lose weight with GLP-1s, the answer is no, not fully.

Mild looseness or crepey texture can improve over time. This is most likely to occur if you have good skin elasticity and have lost a small or moderate amount of weight.

If you have lost a significant amount of weight, particularly if it's 100 pounds or more, your skin has likely stretched to a degree beyond what your body can naturally correct. The structural damage to the collagen and elastin fibers is too extensive.

Can Exercise Get Rid of Loose Skin After GLP-1 Weight Loss?

Exercise is good for you for countless reasons, but tightening loose skin isn't one of them.

Building abdominal muscle tone will improve your core strength and may create a slightly firmer feel or appearance. However, it has no effect on your skin. Patients sometimes spend months doing core work hoping to avoid surgery, only to realize that no amount of crunches can make the skin hanging from their midsection retract.

For significant excess skin following major GLP-1 weight loss, a tummy tuck is the only way to physically remove the surplus tissue. The procedure can also remove stubborn fat deposits and tighten weakened abdominal muscles.

How Do I Know If a Tummy Tuck Is Right for Me?

You may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty after GLP-1 weight loss if:

  • You feel self-conscious about your midsection despite reaching your weight loss goal
  • You have loose, hanging abdominal skin (sometimes called an "apron")
  • The excess skin causes chafing, rashes or skin irritation or makes it difficult to engage in physical activity
  • You find yourself tucking loose skin into clothing or wearing compression garments to feel comfortable
  • Your abdominal muscles have separated or weakened
  • You have pockets of stubborn fat that do not respond to the medication, diet or exercise
  • You are at or near a stable weight and not planning further significant weight loss

The best way to know for certain is a one-on-one consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Brad Bengtson, Dr. David Alfonso and Dr. Narges Horriat.

How Long Should I Wait After GLP-1 Weight Loss for a Tummy Tuck?

Our surgeons typically recommend that your weight should be stable for at least three to six months before tummy tuck surgery. "Stable" means you're no longer actively losing, and your weight isn't fluctuating significantly from week to week.

The reasoning behind this recommendation is simple. If your weight is still changing, your surgeon is working with a moving target. Losing another significant amount of weight after your surgery may cause you to develop new loose skin. If you regain weight, it can restretch your skin and compromise your results.

Waiting can feel frustrating, but getting the timing right means your surgeon can plan the procedure around the body you'll be living in long-term, and that makes a real difference in the quality and longevity of your results.

What Types of Tummy Tuck Are Available in Grand Rapids at the Bengtson Center?

At the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, our surgeons perform several types of abdominoplasty and body lift procedures. Your surgeon will recommend the best approach for you during your consultation.

Standard Tummy Tuck

A standard tummy tuck addresses the full midsection by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the abdominal wall muscles. This is a common option for patients who've lost significant weight, including after GLP-1 medications.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck is a less extensive procedure that focuses on the area below the navel. A mini tummy tuck may be appropriate for patients with a smaller amount of excess skin who do not need muscle repair.

Drainless Tummy Tuck

Dr. Alfonso offers the drainless tummy tuck for nearly all of his patients. With this technique, surgical drains are not required during recovery to prevent fluid accumulation. Many patients find this is a physically and psychologically more comfortable option.

Circumferential Abdominoplasty

For weight loss patients who have excess skin that wraps from the abdomen to the flanks and back, this approach addresses the full circumference of the midsection. Dr. Alfonso also offers the drainless option for this procedure.
